Short answer: When you source sidecar motorcycles from China, check four things before price: the factory's sidecar track record, the drivetrain and handling features, the certifications your market requires, and whether it can supply CBU, SKD or CKD to fit your import duties.
1. Who buys sidecar motorcycles?
| Use | What matters most |
|---|---|
| Touring & adventure | Engine power (300–500cc), comfort, luggage space |
| Passenger transport | Seating, stability, low running cost |
| Cargo & utility | Payload, sturdy frame, easy maintenance |
| Rental & tourism fleets | Reliability, spare parts supply, easy handling for new riders |
2. Specs that separate a good sidecar from a bad one
- Shaft drive vs. chain drive. Shaft drive needs less maintenance and suits fleets and long-distance riding.
- Reverse gear. A sidecar rig is wide and heavy; reverse makes parking and tight turns practical.
- Frame and sidecar mounting. Ask how the sidecar is attached and aligned, and request test reports.
- Brakes. Check whether the sidecar wheel has its own brake.
- Engine range. Match displacement to use: 150–200cc for city and new riders, 300cc for all-round use, 500cc class for touring.
3. Certifications to ask for
Requirements depend on your market. Common ones include CE / EEC (Europe), EPA (USA), Euro 5+ emissions and ISO 9001 for the factory's quality system. Ask the supplier for the certificate that covers the exact model you are buying, not just a factory-level document.
4. CBU, SKD or CKD?
- CBU – fully built, ready to sell. Simplest, often highest duty.
- SKD – partly assembled; final assembly in your country.
- CKD – shipped as parts for local assembly; often lowest duty, needs an assembly line and trained staff.

5. Factory checklist
- Years of sidecar production and models currently in production
- Model-specific certificates for your market
- Sample order available before mass production
- OEM/ODM options: colours, decals, packaging, spec changes
- Spare parts supply and after-sales manuals
