When importing motorcycles, how the bikes are shipped matters as much as which bikes you choose. The three supply modes — CBU, SKD and CKD — change your landed cost, tariff bill, and operational requirements dramatically.

CBU: Complete Built Unit

Motorcycles arrive fully assembled. Unload, unwrap, sell.

Best for: first orders, market testing, small volumes, countries without assembly-friendly tariff structures.

Trade-offs: highest per-unit shipping cost (assembled bikes take more container space) and standard import duties. But zero local investment — no assembly line, no technicians, no parts inventory management.

SKD: Semi Knocked Down

Motorcycles arrive partially disassembled — typically wheels, handlebars, battery and mirrors off. Local workers complete final assembly in hours per unit.

Best for: markets where SKD kits carry significantly lower import duties than CBU units, and buyers with basic workshop facilities.

Trade-offs: you need assembly space and trained staff, but nothing close to a real factory. Many countries in Africa, South Asia and Latin America offer meaningful tariff advantages for SKD.

CKD: Completely Knocked Down

Every component ships in kits; local assembly builds the complete motorcycle. This is how most large-volume motorcycle markets actually work.

Best for: high-volume programs (typically thousands of units annually), markets with strong local-assembly incentives, and partners building a long-term manufacturing presence.

Trade-offs: real assembly capability required — line, tooling, QC process, trained technicians. But the economics at volume are unbeatable: lowest tariffs, lowest shipping cost per unit, and often local-government incentives for creating assembly jobs.
